I apologize, I didn’t get a chance to compile any links for today, so here’s a haphazardly thrown together daily discussion thread for your enjoyment…
Start Charlie Batch!
No. Not really.
No worries Adam….everyone is allowed their Dennis Dixon day’s…..
(had to say it)
I usually don’t worry about preseason games because they don’t mean shit. However, the Steelers looked really bad last night, aside from the first series with Ben.
As far as Dwyer, he looked good and I don’t see why he can’t make the team. Just keep Mendenhall, Moore, Redman and Dwyer. There isn’t any need to keep Summers, a FB that can’t figure out how to block well isn’t worth keeping if you have better runners around. Just keep McHugh to fill the FB role when the need arises.
Besides the lack of offense, I really am worried about the secondary. Revis would have gone a long way in that regard. These last few 1st rounds haven’t exactly been stellar by Colbert and Tomlin. Timmons is just OK, Hood is just OK, and Mendenhall, while looking good, is still a RB and we all know how easy it is to find decent RBs.
I know it’s hindsight and all that, but this team would look better had they not allowed the Jets to trade up and grab Revis (or just drafted Leon Hall), and had they traded up to get Oher. We could do without Timmons and Hood pretty easily. Sure we’d be worried about the DL backups, but since Keisel and Smith are still starting, I’m sure that Eason and whomever would be fine backing those guys up.
You had me up till the part about Juan and Ziggy. It’s clear that the Steelers don’t plan to use Summers so no reason to keep him around just to say, “See, we have a FB!” And if that means Dwyer makes the team, all else equal, fine.
But I thought Juan was borderline dominating last night and there was a pretty big dropoff from him and Potsie (after he got Eli’d early) to Keyaron and Foote. I take your point — Revis would solve a lot of problems — but I’m not sure Oher would make the Steelers’ current o-line that much better, unless we’re assuming that that Steelers would have still drafted Maurkice this time around.
Whatever, I don’t think things re as dire as they seem. This o-line is better than last year’s and the 2008 version that won the Super Bowl. I also think the running game will be better, and so will the defense. The biggest obstacle to the postseason is getting through the first month of the season without a QB. But we already knew that.
Yeah, I know I’m overreacting to one bad !!preseason!! game. I guess being at the game and being surrounded by Broncos fans laughing at your team does that to you.
Good point. And to be fair, it was probably a nice distraction from the fact that Brady Quinn is one play away.
OK, I’ve officially seen enough of Dennis Dixon. He’s fun and exciting and I have no need to go back to the days when the rest of the team was trying to overcome the erratic play of the QB to win games. I didn’t stick around long enough to see Leftwich play, but he must have been better.
Also, I agree with cols that the secondary looked bad. I agree with Ryan that Timmons looked dominant. In fact he looked like the best DB on the team.
The WaPo’s Mike Wise just tweeted that he hears Ben will be suspended five games. I suspect Cowlishaw or Graziano are his source because five sounds completely arbitrary. I’ll wait to see what Mark Madden says before commenting further.
If true, let me be the first to say “Eph you, Roger Goodell!”
At least Cleveland is the 5th game.
“I’ll wait to see what Mark Madden says before commenting further.”
Words to live by.
Methinks Wise is FOS.
It’s going to 4 games.
Apparently, Wise went on his radio show and admitted to making the whole thing up. Yes, irresponsible bloggers are killing journalism!
Did anyone else notice Ike Taylor blitzing, I caught at least 3 time. One resulted in a sack, one a hurry and the other had the pass going the other way.
Right — I remember thinking it odd at the time. On the first blitz, I think, Ike was totally juked by play action and got to Orton a step late. He still hurried the throw, though. And all in all, he wasn’t bad. Plus, he sacked Quinn, which is always nice.
I really liked the Taylor blitzes – he’s fast so that’s a nice wrinkle.. Timmons, my God, the man is playing well…..Byron looked disinterested to me….Dixon looked like another in a long line of RB’s trying to play QB…..Mendy looked good too…and I thought Flozell stepped up last night….
And I just won’t comment on Silverback….I wouldn’t want him to take it the wrong way….even if it was complimentary….
I think I would have posted a diatribe that would have made me lose my free sub. to HSS’s AND steelerslounge given the same scenario with me in a crowd of orange crush adherents.
My friend phoned me this morning and said “calm down, idiot. It’s still preseason right?” And he’s a Lions fan so he knows angst.
BTW. everyone already see this? http://tinyurl.com/384t7hz
Suh tries to decapitate Delhomme. In the old days, that might have sparked a massive brawl. Now its all about finger pointing by the O-line. I guess you wonder who gets to match up with Suh and you opt instead for the finger…lol..Still, that was pretty brutal. We aren’t teh only team that looks undisciplined so far.
A lot of people talking about us drafting corner next year in the first (some have already given up on this season and are looking ahead) I don’t want to pay first round CB money to anyone. It’s like takinga QB now or even worse in terms of sal cap questions. When Dick unleashes the hounds for real we don’t really need to have a 15 mill+++ corner back there. An Ike clone with hands will be just fine in the 3rd round.
I have to rewatch the game. I totally missed Mendy’s contributions. I rarely watch the whole game in preseason right through as my friends are usually over trying to get me to join their fantasy league. Which I never do cause I am old school.ONe of them has..ahem…3 favourite teams? WTF?!
I’m not worried about Mendy anyway..he’s a solid back.
Poor Byron. I wouldn’t put my ex mother-in-law in back of our backup O-line. He had the look of a man who has been asked if he needs a blindfold before the march to eternity. This in stupid to say and its not happening but ..I would be overjoyed if we made a trade for a guard or RT right about now. When you watch Pouncey you start to realize what level we have gotten used to on the line. It’s depressing. But as Ryan says, we’ll probably be better along the O-line this year than the Super Bowl season.
Really, Bill? You thought Flozell stepped up last night? I thought he stepped in it repeatedly.
I rooting for the guy, too, but I hope that our offense will be able to overcome a world-record number of false-start penalties this season.
Meh. I’ve concluded the team played like it was a pre-season game: some guys hardly trying at all; and a couple others trying too hard.
One positive that hasn’t been noted: No one got badly hurt, which is one of the major goals during a game like this, and one we tend to forget.
With Deshea gone now, someone has to blitz from the corner, I guess. And it might as well be the guy who can’t catch anyway. Seriously, though, I liked it. The blitzes weren’t too crazy in general, but some experimenting is good.
Shit! You are right, that’s rule #1 for the preseason.
Good game Steelers!!!!!
