Steelers vs. Giants: Preseason Game 2 (and Daily Thread)…

We’re about to get our first look at Ben Roethlisberger and Jason Worilds this preseason, so that should be interesting. Not so interesting? Rhett Bomar is expected to play the entire game at quarterback for the Giants. Rhett Bomar? Get excited.

Consider this your daily thread and game thread, so go crazy, folks.

Oh how I hate the preseason. In a sane world, this would be the last preseason game. Here’s to nobody getting injured!

  • Cols714

The two things I care about today? Sepulveda kicking off, and the play of Pouncey and Adams. OK, that’s three but I think they are probably the three most important battles going on in camp.

I heard that Jonathan Scott is going to get a look with the first team offensive line. Sounds like the team isn’t exactly sold on Flozel the Hotel yet.

  • Cols714

He looked pretty bad last week. Hopefully he improves. The thought of Adams and Scott manning RT really makes me miss Willie Colon.

On a brighter note, at least I didn’t have to deal with the incessant “Colon should be moved to guard” nonsense from Steelers’ commenters this year.

I want to see more of Crezdon Butler. One..because I dig the name. And two because he looks like a player. Good size, good instincts.

Agree with Cols on Robo, our new center and RT. I am a bit scared that Pouncey appears to be on the fast track to starting at C but he’s clearly wowed Tomlin with his physical and mental abilities. It’s possible that Hartwig gets cut in that scenario though. It’s said that C is his only position and he’s making ..what…2.5 Mill a year? Legs can play C if something..gulp..happens to Maurkice. IF Hartiwig can’t back up any other position and he’s widely seen as a weak player to start with..you have to wonder if he survives the cuts. That’s a big gamble but maybe youth will be served this year considering we are without our QB for 4 games and our No. 1 receiver is elsewhere. Looks like an opportune time to try something different.

I think Scott has a legit chance to be the RT. Not exactly overjoyed at the prospect and it was only one preseason game but Adams looked awful considering his vet status in the league. We might have gambled and lost on a player who seems much closer to the end of his career than previously thought. Still 3 games to figure out if he is just getting used to a new position etc. but yeesh..he needs to improve dramatically and very quickly.

Isn’t some guy named Ben playing tonight? I would love to see him light up the Giants secondary. With the first team O-line of course. Then you drag him off the field as fast as possible. Watching Eli get smeared has put the fear of God in me..No injuries please…

Big Ben’s starting and Jonathan Dwyer’s in the Duce Staley Gameday Sweats.

For what it’s worth, Wex sez the Hotel is miles ahead of Scott.

Of course, it was Flozell’s missed assignment that help rushed Rothlisberger into an interception.

  • Randy Steele

And that was Flozell’s holding penalty…

  • Randy Steele

Well, Matt Spaeth got his one-and-probably-only reception for the year. Good one, too.
Too bad it’s wasted on a pre-season game.

Robo is not making a compelling argument for himself as a kick-off specialist.

And along standing quietly alone the sidelines, Stephan Logan must be shaking his head.

Audio Pass screws up. Steelers game station is playing Cowboys. So for now I’m listening to the Giants’ guys.

Not sure what the single-back look with MeMo from the 1-yard line is supposed to accomplish (well, other than running out the half and losing yards), but I’d be happy to never see that again. Thanks.

  • IsraelP

What a nice drive that was! Who are the linemen?

  • SteelerBill

Dear God I was all by myself over at HSS….I’m joining the party a little late…

Ben looked a bit nervous, but still was 6-8…..Pouncey looks good as does Redman, Brown, Leftwich, DD…..First team OL still makes me nervous

  • Randy Steele

One small point: I don’t think the Steelers would have been out of line to try to kick a field goal at the end of the game, even though they had it won.

Sure, during the regular season it would have been bad form, but this is pre-season after all. It doesn’t count. You need to get your field goal team as much work during a game as possible, too.

The Steelers have had the better of both the Lions and the Giants later in games. That suggests to me that they have pretty good depth. The first team offensive line looks weak as expected. I’m also suprised to say that in both games the first team defensive line has not made a good impression on passing plays.

Oh, and having to watch the opposing team’s Homer McFanboy broadcast sucks (but forgivable in the preseason).

  • Randy Steele

What a tip? Do what I do. Turn off the sound on the TV and tune in to Hillgrove & Co. via the internet. That way we can listen to our very own Homer McFanboys in all their glory.

Yeah I may try that next week if I’m stuck with the opposite video feed again, though it could be tricky since these telecasts I’m finding tend to be on delays of up to a minute.

Related question, did the Steelers homer broadcast (tv or radio) keep refering to the end around as a reverse?
