Morning Links (and Daily Thread)…

A quick daily look at what’s happening around Steelers Nation. And consider this your open thread for discussing the days events and, well, anything else that comes to mind about the Black and Gold.

– Worth posting because it’s been true over the past month: Great moments in unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merchandise. Troy Polamalu covers everything. [PSAMP]

– Speaking of Troy … he’s the AFC Defensive Player Of The Week for the second week in a row. He and James Harrison are both legitimate contenders for the Defensive Player Of The Year Award. [Steelers]

– The Steelers defense had a slow start on Sunday, but man did they rebound. [Behind The Steel Curtain]

– And for your random YouTube of the day: Remember the Troy Polamalu blitz and strip of Joe Flacco? The Steelers ran the exact same blitz in the first quarter of that game and it was again perfect. Polamalu was unblocked and tackled Willis McGahee for a loss in the backfield.

“He is the first player to win the award on defense in consecutive weeks since Bruce Smith accomplished the feat in 1990. ”

I don’t know if “fisrt since 1990″ is only AFC or perhaps NFL.

they need to run that play more often :) lol

I may not remember this correctly, but I think they ran this very same blitz package during the play in which Flacco threw the long completion to… I think it was Bolden. Anyway, it doesn’t always work.

Troy blitzing works best against the run, and the sack was a run blitz. If you have a team in 3rd and long Troy is best served working zone on the opposite side of the field from Ike Taylor. With Troy on the weak side and Ike covering the same side it is too easy of a read to go at B-mac/clark.

that makes the Ravens missing Troy in the 4Q even more inexcusable…and more delicious for us Steelers fans!

Live from Middle East TV on satellite from Cyprus:

NFL WEEK 15 Sunday December 19th:
20:00 New Orleans Saints at Baltimore Ravens
23:15 New York Jets at Pittsburgh Steelers

I think I can work that out with my wife.
