AFC Championship Game: Jets-Steelers Thread

It all comes down to this.

If you have any lingering doubts, here’s how my three-year-old explained it to me Friday, as I played “Renegade” for him (which he described as “a nice song”):

“Go Steelers … just don’t wait for anything.”

This is your game thread…

    Do work!!!! Happy birthday Cope!

Few things running through my head as I catch up on all the commentary and video before today’s Jets-Steelers game:

    1) Happy Birthday Myron!

    2) It seems that the first thing they teach you when you go to NFL analysis school is to say, “The key to the game is to pressure the quarterback.” And just about everyone says this before every Steelers game. Well they’ve been pressuring Ben for 13 games and look where we are.

    3) The Steelers receiver options have me feeling really good about this game. I respect the Jets defense. But we have a strong quarterback who likes to spread it around.

    4) There’s a lot of talk about how much the Jets players love Rex Ryan. I can’t imagine it’s any stronger than what our defense feels for Dick LeBeau. Shows you don’t have to have to be a court jester to motivate your team.

    5) I think Wes Welker would like to play for Tomlin. You see the beginning of Wednesday’s press conference? He started by saying (mostly my paraphrasing) “Welcome. A lot’s happened since we last did this. The sun went down. The sun came up.”

That’s all. I need to get some rest. This is going to be a tough game.

Marshall Faulk is about to make me throw up – I guess the Jets are going to embarass us since they have an advantage everywhere.

  • Cols714

I’m feeling pretty confident. Which never ends well for some reason. I just think, barring bad ST play, that the Steelers will win without me having to eat my Terrible Towel throughout the game.

    • RoB D

Thats really a huge part of it, I think. ST’s have gone sideways if not backwards on us. Is Worilds dressing for this one? He’s a difference maker on return coverage.

Hope the O-line is healthy as Tomlin seemed to infer all week. We need them playing to the max of their abilities this week.

      • Cols714

I don’t get why we are harping on Worilds. It’d be great if he can play, but isn’t the reason the ST have been bad lately is because our kicker stinks at kickoffs and our new punter sucks in general? Why aren’t we harping on that?

        • Jackson_8616

Not harping on Worilds, but he’s the Polamalu of Special teams. Our kickers are general awful.

Impressive slippery bit of running by Mendenhall on the first drive . Bad blocking should have yielded a short loss, but he sneakes through for 8. I think some of the Jets let up when Mendenhall put his hand on the ground after a two yard gain or so assuming he was tackled.

Nice opening drive. I think Miller made that catch. And I really hope Roethlisberger and Pouncey heal up and are 100% the rest of the game.

    • Jackson_8616

That’s a broken ankle.. He’s done for the year either way.

      • Anonymous

Damn, that’s a blow. Did you just see it or did they announce it?

        • Jackson_8616

The way the guy fell on him, there’s no way that’s not broken. If not, it’s a severe Low Ankle sprain.

Oh man, if Wallace just slows down a little, Revis jumps right through his back for an easy DPI.

    QOTD:

We have one TV in the house. I’m letting my youngest son get his turn on the Wii. I’m following the game here and on NFL.com.

Am I good for sacrificing for him, or am I bad for not guiding him in the proper ways of Steeler fanhood?

    • Anonymous

I think the once every several years event wins irrespective of guiding “Steeler fanhood.”

    Satisfactory first half.

  • Cols714

    Quick halftime comments:
    Defense looks great
Mendenhall looks awesome and the OL looks good
Ben is a little bit off, but for once the OL and running game is carrying the team.
    Pouncey hurts a lot

For the Jets, Sanchez looks pretty good, he’s been accurate so far. The Jets running game is stuffed.

Throwing into that coverage was just a dumb decision by Roethlisberger.

  • Anonymous

Hell of a four down goal line stand there. Let’s get it out of the shadow, offense.

    • Anonymous

      Sigh…

Ladies and gentlemen, your American Football Conference champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers!

    most important: pouncey’s status

  • RoB D

What a disastrous second half by the offense. And the prevent D sucked rocks but it also made them run a lot of plays with the consequence of running a lot of time off the clock. It’s Dick L’s way and its always been the same. He’s had some success…lol..so I ain’t complaining.

Ben could have had 3 or 4 picks in this one though. I don’t know whether to blame him or BA..at this point..it doesn’t really matter.

2 weeks to heal and get ready for a very tough GB team. It’s going to be a game for the ages I think. We are going to need to outscore that team. So Ben and Co. better play a heck of alot better than they did in the 2nd half..although converting 2 first downs at the end showed me something…clutch again. He just didn’t seem to have the patience to wait them out and threw a few very ill advised balls.

i am running on adrenaline and coffee..whoooo..what a game.

    • Cols714

BA called a great game. Ben was a little bit off, but the running game was working because the Jets were covering everyone.

Good game all around. The prevent D worked perfectly, when you are up 24-0, you make the other team earn their yards, and the they did.

Sanchez played great, But Ben made two very nice plays at the end.

These are the good old days.

  • SteelerBill

Don’t forget Ben was sick during this game – here’s hoping Pouncey is ok…Tomlin says sprained ankle

  • RoB D

Watching Pittsburgh TV on the net..they said that Pouncey has a high ankle sprain.

Not the best news ever..but it beats “broken” every which way.

Hope he’s ok..we need that stud in the Super Bowl.

2 weeks to heal, young man.
