Merril Hoge talks SteelersBecause we value you, Steelers Lounge patron, a very special treat: ESPN analyst and former Steelers running back Merril Hoge stopped by the podcast to talk … Ravens-Steelers. It’s less than 15 minutes, but every second is action-packed.

Merril says the offensive line has improved (seriously), thinks that the Ravens will struggle to stop Mike Wallace even though they’ll game plan against him, and that Rashard Mendenhall can actually run against Baltimore’s defense. And that’s just the first few minutes.

We also talk about Troy, and if things work out this weekend, how, exactly, the Steelers can slow down the Patriots*. And, of course, who Merril likes in this matchup. Conversationalizing starts below…

* Yes, I know, it’s presumptuous to look ahead, but since I won’t be talking to Merril next week, I figured I might as well ask him now. Certainly, the Karma Gods will take that into consideration.

    Great podcast and very interesting stuff! … I really like Merril, but he does seem to have a little bit of the Steeler’s “homerism” in him as compared to being a true analyst … Don’t get me wrong though, it’s good stuff! Football Tailgate

    Hoge is a good commentator..always enjoy his takes on things NFL.

    I believe he and many of us are being a little overly optimistic about the O-line. I admit that they have been playing a lot better than earlier in the year but it’s not going to be a strength IMO, going up against Ngata et all for the Ravens. I expect to see Ben scrambling for all he’s worth as usual.

    WE need to start fast in this game, knock off any rust accumulated and hopefully score a few TD”s early. Change the expectations of a closely fought contest into one where the RAVens are climbing up a hill. They love to win close slugfests and I sugggest we try not to give them any chance of that. The Steelers are the better team and its up to them to prove it.

    Excellent website. However, a few points.

    What exactly is the definition of “well” when it comes to Baltimore matching up against Brady?

    They have won one game in 9 years with the 2010 game being the first game being the post-Moss contest.

    Ole Merrill missed the fact that the Patriots put up 31 points against Green bay with 18 minutes TOP. They also had two healthy D line guys that game and Green Bay had three drives extended by horrendous penalties.
