Steelers Lounge Podcast #34: Super Bowl Bye Week — Andy Russell

It’s another podcast, y’all. We have a week off until the Super Bowl so JJ, Adam and I briefly discuss last season’s Packers-Steelers game; get to some reader mail; rail on Marshall Faulk; talk about Dougie Legursky, Maurkice Pouncey and team spokesman Chris Kemoeatu; and go in-depth on the history of the zone blitz.

And we manage to squeeze all that into 45 minutes. Thanks again for the e-mails (and keep them coming). We’ll have a couple more podcasts next week leading up to the big game.

For now, though, enjoy. Yapping starts below…

    Good stuff, men.

If ESPN makes a person more stupid each time he watches, the SL podcast is the antidote.

    Very nice stuff, guys.

A few notes – BJ Raji did play in 2009 – even dropped into coverage a few times. I remember him chasing Heath on one of his many catches on the day. He didn’t make much of an impact, but I think he was a rookie then, and from what I’ve read he only appears to have become a real game-changer in the latter half of the season.

Also, Tim Layden has a really nice interview with LeBeau and a pretty good chapter on the development of the zone blitz scheme. LeBeau points to the origins of the basic concept as being inspired by Bill Arnsparger’s Killer B’s Dolphins defense in the 1970s, which pioneered the use of zones to fake out QBs into thinking they had man coverage whenever a blitz was on. LeBeau identifies Arnsparger’s idea of getting the pressure of a blitz combined with the safety of zone coverage deep as being key for him.

The Packer player I’m most worried about is BJ Raji because he has the ability to blown up the center of the Steelers’ o-line, particularly with Legursky snapping the ball.
