No Hall of Fame for Jerome Bettis, Dermontti Dawson

Ted wrote about it last September, and today, on the eve of the Steelers-Packers Super Bowl, it became a reality: Jerome Bettis will not be a part of the Hall of Fame class of 2011. Center Dermontti Dawson, who has been eligible for the hall since 2005, also missed the cut.

If there’s a bright side (although I suspect Bussie and Dawson might have trouble seeing it at the moment), there’s this, from Ted’s original post:

Hopefully, [the Hall of Fame committee] will give Will Shields a similar, short-term shaft, which could allow for Dawson to sneak in with the 2012 class. That would make for a glorious honeymoon weekend if Bettis and Dawson are in the same Hall of Fame inductee class.

As the old saying goes: There’s always next year.

For now, though, it’s up to the Steelers to make this right by, you know, winning the Super Bowl by many, many touchdowns. I think Jerome and his big-ass Super Bowl ring would want it that way.

Dawson and Haley not getting in, while Sanders did, is an outrage. I guess it is a sign of the times when a flash-and-dash player gets in, while a physical football player does not…

I think you increase your chances of getting in if you are a member of the NFLN

That being said, I have no troubles with the guys who made it. I like to see some “legacy” guys from the early roots of the game make it. They helped to build it and did’t get the TV exposure that the stars of the 70s and on did.

Dawson and Bettis will make it. I would love to go watch that ceremony.
