Chattin’ Thread for Week of Sept. 12 (a.k.a: Post-Ravens Beatdown Thread)

Consider this your thread for reliving the magic of Sunday’s thrashing…

Perhaps I was a tad optimistic with the Ravens game thread. Carry on…

I never doubted (much) that Troy would sign an extension with the Steelers.  Dan Rooney has always expressed regret that the Steelers allowed Rod Woodson to leave as a free agent, and I didn’t think he was going to allow that to happen with Troy.

Not in the same category yet (“all-time great Steeler”), but let’s hope the Steelers also don’t let Mike Wallace hit free agency in the off-season.  It would be awful to see him sign with the Ravens, who surely have him on their radar already, and just as surely will STILL be looking to shore up their receiving corps next year.

  • calig23

So… poor coverage on the opening kickoff, a penalty on the kickoff, a long run by Rice with some poor tackling, and a long TD pass to Boldin. Not exactly the start you’d like to see.

  • Cols714

    Wow that was fast.

  • Cols714

This is what I mean about CBs. What exactly was McFadden supposed to do there? He had good coverage but Flacco just stuck it in there and he just missed the ball.

  • calig23

They look really bad so far.

  • Cols714

Ugly start. Yeesh. Our two supposedly smartest linemen completely missed Suggs. I’m sure this is Bruce Arians fault somehow.

  • calig23

I know it hasn’t worked out too badly so far, but I’m a little leery of trying to return some of these kickoffs.

  • calig23

I really don’t like Phil Simms.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawne-Hindbaugh/1683182171 Shawne Hindbaugh

What about Phil Simms comment about how he liked the refs call against the Steelers, for unsportsmanlike conduct, when it was both teams were involved in the fight. He said, “I love that call”  Is it unsportsmanlike to take sides when you are a commentator? He never fails to side against the Steelers, Jealous much??  Bad memories from being beat up and sacked by the Steelers? what do you think?

  • calig23

    Alright. On the board now.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

    Manny!

  • calig23

Was it me, or was one of the defender basically hugging Wallace on that near pick by Reed?

  • calig23

Ugh. This is just an ugly performance by defense. Can’t stop the run, can’t stop the pass. Ben and the offense are really going to pick it up.

  • calig23

So much for the 2 minute offense

  • David

    We look old on D.

Rice is torching us. Can someone please cover him?

  • calig23

    Seriously?! This game sucks.

  • calig23

    Well, this game is over.

  • calig23

I can’t remember the last time the Steelers looked this completely inept in all phases of the game, excepting games against the Patriots. They look completely unprepared and completely overmatched.

  • calig23

And it just keeps getting worse….

  • Anonymous

“False start #74.”  It’s been awhile!

  • Anonymous

What’s with all our super receivers?

  • calig23

    Sigh…

  • Fantrappedindelaware

When you can’t protect the qb and you can’t rush the passer, you lose.  That’s what happened today.

    • phys_ed

trapped in newark de. where you watch the games at?

  • Anonymous

So do we have suspensions next week?

    • Anonymous

Definitely not on the Steelers side. Oher, Leach (I think it was; it’s hard to see), and especially Ray Rice are all reasonable candidates for a game or three. The Ravens were absolute thugs all game with constant late cheap shots. And then they start a big scrum when Oher goes after Taylor and then joins Rice in attacking Polalamu while Leach grabs whomever he can find. That was disgraceful and it was infuriating that not only were none of those three clowns ejected from the game, the referees had the temerity to call the only foul on Ike Taylor, presumable illegally being grabbed and pulled down by Oher.

  • calig23

Well, I guess it’s only fitting. Ike Taylor has been the only Steeler to show up in a positive way, and now he commits a dumb penalty.

  • Fantrappedindelaware

Throwing the football is awesome.  Reminds me of the Tommy Gun performance.

  • Rob D

Okay, that team was ready to play. Yes, sir!

It’s tempting to just call it an old fashioned butt kicking ..stuff happens..etc. and that it will be forgotten by mid season when the Steelers are 7-1. And that has a lot of truth to it as most of us who have been watching football long enough know. DOn’t get too high after a big win and don’t overreact when your team fails to show up for a divisional game on the road.

I’m bitterly disappointed in this loss though. It’s like every thing some of us feared about the O-line and the aging defense was shown to be not without foundation. Ben was hurried all day and when he DID throw, he was very inaccurate. I think its the first time in a while I have seen him panic and be completely flustered in a regular season game for quite some time. I saw Legs get thrown around a few times and I think they are going to have to go back to Foster as soon as possible. He’s just too small and he’ll be picked on all year. No “no huddle” for the most part. YMC was invisible. Hines Ward was our deep threat. Good lord.

Run a name check on big names on D who weren’t factors and you could probably name just about all of them outside of Ike Taylor. Big props to him..its hard to keep your energy and “want to” up when the rest of the team thinks it’s the Pro Bowl in Hawaii and they don’t have to tackle..lol..or think.

Was it 6 or 7 turnovers? Who cares. Mendy could have added another fumble to the total as he was doing his loaf of bread carry with the ball before Lewis hit him.

I hope they have Starks and Adams on speed dial. I really don’t think this line is going to hold up. Don’t believe J. Scott, Kemo or Legs should be starters. Kemo can be covered for somewhat I guess but for a big man, he sure ends up on the ground a lot behind the LOS. But we know what he’s capable of so it shouldn’t surprise us. Ngata is the biggest D-line stud in the league..

Anyway..its hard to find a positive. I think its a huge loss and may portend worse. If teams can run on us, they can certainly bludgeon us in the pass game. It’s that simple. And judging by the precision of our offense today, we aren’t up to the job YET of keeping up with the Jones’ on the scoreboard.

Gotta go soak my head for a while..

  • David

Troy, Juan, McFadden, Smith got owned on D.

    Ben accounted for 5 TOs.

Legursky whiffed on Ngata on the 1st play of the 2nd.

Hines got mauled by their D all day.

It should be an interesting Week 9 rematch. Will they be the team to beat? Will we be out of the AFCN race?

  • Cols714

Well that was awful. What to take from this game? Nothing. It was an ass kicking. No need to dwell on it, let’s just get a victory next week.

  • David

Cols, there lies in the problem.

    -Was it our aging D?
-Why were Woodley/Silverback not effective? Why was Juan a step slow all game long?
-Was it our secondary that has now been exposed by Rogers and now Unibrow?
-Was it our O-line is more porous that last year?
-Was it Ben, a la the yr after his accident where he was off all year long?

OK, the answers? Like you said, next game we shall see…

    • Cols714

      David
I don’t think it was any of this. I think that yes Aaron Smith might be showing his age and clearly James Harrison is not the same quite yet.

Everything else? I’m thinking let’s just write this off as a bad game and move on. The Steelers deserve the benefit of the doubt here. The Ravens played awesome and the Steelers played like crap. It happens.

      • Anonymous

There was a lot of underneath stuff open throughout the game, and it wasn’t all the normal kind resulting from playing off. When that happens the man in coverage is coming up to make the tackle. In this game the underneath stuff was open and I’m watching the play with no clue who’s supposed to be in coverage. Either people were badly out of position, didn’t know their roles, or LeBeau got badly beaten.

        • Joe Stitt

I agree. Most times when they were wide open, I couldn’t even guess who blew the coverage. And it wasn’t the normal bend, don’t break defense. I can’t remember a game with so many missed tackles.

  • David

Oh, one more question: can teams now run on us?

    • Cols714

      No.

  • David

OK, using SteelerBill’s 24 hr rule, here is my last thought: Is Smith pretty much done now? I’ve never seen him so weak, getting pushed back and aside.

    • Cols714

I think he may be nothing more than a backup now.

    • Cols714

I think he may be nothing more than a backup now.

  • Cols714

Now all we get to read all week are freakouts by Steelers fans. Look, this game was awful, just awful. But it does not mean that the Steelers suck and they need to get rid of everybody and install new schemes and all this crap we are going to read all week.

It just means that the Ravens were better by a ton this week. The Steelers will get better. Check back after next weeks game. If we lose again then it’s time to freak out. Not now though.

I’m telling you, just write it off and move on.

  • TO

    Two things:
How long before Chirs Scott is cut, Jonathan Scott is demoted and Starks is signed?
The team looked entitled.  Think they’ll just show up and the opposition will cower in fear and then implode.

  • Anonymous

It could have been worse.  After the stop on fourth down, I was sure we were looking at a safety .

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UR6KXGPFIFYZSVJNCXCJNHDQJQ Bob Costas

Crap.  PFT says Colon has a torn triceps and is likely done for the year.

Flozell’s phone has almost certainly already rung.

  • David

Confirmed on PG. Gilbert, welcome to the bigs!

The fake extra point, going for it on 4th D, and passing in the 4th Q all told me how much the Raisins wanted this game. I mean, more than winning in Indy in Feb.

    • TO

They’ll sign Adams.  Just what the Steelers need, another starting lineman that no team in the league will even look at.  That would make three starters like that, the others being Legs and Scott.

      • Cols714

This totally sucks. Hopefully Adams can play as well as he did last year. Scott did all right last year at the end of the season. He should be OK.

        • Rob D

Adams was on one knee a LOT last year. I was holding my breath the whole time he was with us as he always got dinged up during the games. He is a warrior, but I think he really is done..just too old. Apparently, the Steelers aren’t interested in him. Losing Colon is freaking me out..it’s starting to look like the injury fest that was last year. I fear for Ben’s health as the O-line shuffle begins. Gilbert at RT..hope it  gets good reviews. Looks like my thought that he would be our LT by midseason was pure fantasy and probably better that he cuts his teeth at the “easier” tackle spot.

Our kingdom for a mediocre line! Same old story and its boring but it’s also reality.

Don’t over analyze this game.   Go back and watch the tape.   Ben missed a lot of underneath receivers in this game.   You cannot hold the ball for 4 seconds against the Ravens.   This was the Ravens Super Bowl. The Steelers will be ok.

  • Joe Stitt

Bill Leavy, the head ref from SB XL, is once again the Steelers-Seahawks ref this Sunday. Ready for the week of conspiracy theories and whining?

    • Anonymous

What a foolish decision by the NFL. Bill Leavy doesn’t deserve the crap he’s taken since then, and Mike Holmgren (classless clown that he has shown himself to be) owes him a big apology. But why invite the manufactured controversy?

    • countertorque

We need to embrace the whining.  Here are some useful phrases to help the conversation along.

“Yes, the Steelers regularly pay the refs.  In fact, I have personally contributed to the fund.”

“I have heard that Roger Godell is considering awarding the superbowl 40 trophy to the Seahawks, but he’s waiting to see how much the Seattle fan base really cares about the outcome.”

“Bill Leavy is a front runner to win Mayor of Pittsburgh in the next election.”

  • K33ger

So I was reading about how well some rookie tackle played for the Pats, and he switched from Left to Right.

This makes me wonder if our problems with the O-line are more scheme related.  Are we asking our tackles to use their brains too much?  Maybe New England and other teams just fall back in a nice tight pattern and don’t peel off to help out etc?

    • Cols714

I don’t know. I think it’s mostly Brady vs Ben. Brady gets rid of the ball so quickly I’m not sure their line has to block for very long.

      • GlennW

That’s part of it, but the Pats’ O-line usually seems to have its act together, including in the empty-backfield spread formation which they often run.  Contrast this with our O-line allowing Suggs to come in untouched on a stunt in that formation– even Brady would have been crushed on that play.  I know, that’s one game, one play.  I’m convinced we can do a better job, and probably will.

        • Anonymous

I don’t know about that. Compare last year’s Patriots O-line performance against the Jets, and the Steelers’ O-line a week later.

Bill Barnwell on the -7, with some interesting historical data: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6960563/upon-initial-review-week-1

  • Joe Stitt

Well guys, I guess it’s time to give up for awhile. The all knowledgeable football guru Warren Sapp says the Steelers are “old, slow, and done”. http://eye-on-football.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/31987461/1

Kinda like his career when he got to Oakland.

Does anybody know whether the Steelers are playing a game this week or did the season end last week?
