Week 2 Game Thread: New York Jets

Well, LaMarr Woodley promised that the Steelers wouldn’t go 0-2. Here’s to hoping the Jets game doesn’t end in a tie. In other news: let’s go Eagles.

Predictions? I have a bad feeling about this game. I’m going Jets 27-20

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

I don’t have a feel for the Jets or which Steelers team will show up, so I have a hard time making a game prediction. I do predict that losing to the Broncos and Tebow in back-to-back weeks will make it more difficult for me to pretend that last season’s playoff game never happened, as I’ve mostly done up to now.

Playing the Jets reminds me of our last AFCCG. That was fun.

  • calig23

A running play that causes Isaac Redman to lose 8 yards seems like a poorly designed running play.

  • calig23

Got some help from the Eagles, holding off Baltimore.

  • calig23

The defense has looked pretty poor on this drive.

  • Cols714

Our Dline isn’t very good. Old Keisel, Old Hampton and Hood are not as good as younger Keisel, Young Hampton, and uninjured Smith.

That’s really a big difference. And on offense it’s basically the BA offense all over again. Including the crazy draw play on 3rd down there.

  • LoungeLegal

Why the end around on 3rd and 4???????

  • calig23

    Yay for dumb penalties.

  • LoungeLegal

    Way to go Juan!

  • calig23

    And another flag…

  • calig23

    This defense is toast.

  • Cols714

The sucky thing is we’ve drafted 2 DL in the 1st round lately. Too bad neither of them has done much.

Donta Hightower, BTW looked really good today.

  • LoungeLegal

Our D looks pretty bad….or the jets are really good. Of course missing Troy and Harrison is a big difference so I’m not on the ledge yet.

  • Cols714

With our D like this, our offense has to come up big.

  • calig23

Nothing I’ve seen in the first game and a half has made me happy with the Haley hiring. I know it’s early, but geez.

    • LoungeLegal

It seems like BA’s offense minus the big plays. Not sure how that’s better. Why install a whole new offense if you’re going to do the same crummy plays?

  • Cols714

I’m inclined to give Haley a bit more time. However I do hope that all of the BA bashers learn something.

  • calig23

There we go. Very nice drive. TD to Heath.

  • Cols714

Ben is just amazing with that play to Cotchery. I really do wonder what would happen if the Steelers had a better OL.

  • LoungeLegal

That was a good series. I’m hoping that Haley is just getting it all figured out.

  • calig23

Wow! TD, Wallace! Great job of getting the feet in.

  • Cols714

Ben is just amazing. Wallace too.

  • LoungeLegal

Great play by both. Classic Ben.

  • calig23

Well, of course. Tebow gets the ball and slices through the middle of the defense with ease.

  • LoungeLegal

I really think that with out Troy and James we need to lower our expectations of this D. Against the run they are both crucial, Troy for obvious reasons and James does a great job of setting the edge.

  • calig23

That seemed like an awfully favorable spot for the Steelers. Not surprisingly, Ryan is challenging it.

  • Cols714

10 point lead, we should not lose this game.

  • Cols714

If I ran the NFL, I’d get rid of replay, except on scoring plays and turnovers which can be challenged but no more automatic. I’d also get rid of FGs and let DBs bump CBs until the ball is in the air.

Just thinking while I waste 15 minutes of my life because of this challenge.

  • calig23

Well that was nice. Recover the muffed punt.

  • LoungeLegal

    Thanks for the challenge Rexy!

  • calig23

Heh. I wonder if Ben was having flashbacks to, what, 2006.? Isn’t Bart Scott the one that absolutely destroyed him a game against the Ravens that year?

  • calig23

    3rd and 33. That’s fun.

  • calig23

Starting to get a bit nervous. They’ve wasted a couple of opportunities to put this game out of reach. 10 points with an entire quarter left is not as safe as I would like.

  • calig23

    Completely phantom penalty there.

  • LoungeLegal

    WTF was that call!!!!????

  • calig23

Fortunately, the defense forces a punt anyways.

  • calig23

Hmm. That seemed like a weak call to me on the Jets, but I’ll take it.

  • calig23

Great catch by Brown to convert. He got blasted by Landry.

  • calig23

Maybe Redman should only get carries in the 4th quarter.

  • calig23

I don’t know. I think that might be overturned. It looked like the Jets player might have had it before Redman’s knee was down.

  • Cols714

    He was down I think.

    • LoungeLegal

      I hope!

      • LoungeLegal

        Yes!

  • calig23

    Call stands.

  • Cols714

Just want to say how awesome Ben and the receivers and Miller are

  • calig23

Redman with the TD. That should do it.

  • Cols714

Well after burying the D early, they looked good. Haley’s offense uses lots of TOP, I’m worried about the number of plays that Ben had to pull out of his ass though.

  • calig23

Why are the Jets punting with 3 minutes left down by 3 scores?

  • Cols714

Cause NFL coaches are so so dumb.

  • David

The more I watch Rex Ryan, the more I like him. He needs a QB, and I’m not talking Mr. Longoria or Tebow.

  • David

But what a Sunday! Patsies lose, Raisins lose, we win, and I get to happily mow my yard now.

    • Cols714

I hate mowing the lawn with a passion. And I have such a small yard that I can’t justify paying someone to do it. Why oh why did our parents think having a lawn was so great?

      • David

Cols, just use the Ted Knight technique on Caddyshack.

“I’m having a party Saturday. You have any plans? Well, why don’t you mow my lawn.”

        • Rob D

          Good one.

My friend once threatened to pave his lawn and paint it green. He loathed all things lawn.

          • Cols714

I’ve seen ads for people to come and paint your lawn. I’m thinking about artificial turf, but installation cost is pretty high.

          • David

Ryan, next thread: Week 3 Raiders: A win for many yards to be mowed happily during the bye week

          • Rob D

I like the fact that this is actually available…my buddy should get royalites..lol..

        • GlennWa

Mowing the lawn is one of the few chores I actually enjoy. Light up a cigar, leave a beer at a rest point, zone out and enjoy some outdoor solitude. Beats the hell out of cleaning the toilets. Of course I can say this now after downsizing out of 3-hour mowing job, to about one hour.

        • http://www.facebook.com/randy.steele.583 Randy Steele

I remember having the lawn-mowing debate with on guy on my staff a couple years ago. His point was that mowing the lawn provided a great excuse to drink beer outdoors, adding, “Of course, that was how my uncle lost his foot…”

        • Azadeh

The smell of fresh cut grass is the best part of mowing .

  • David

Anyone see that fumble by Williams in the ARI-NE game? Kind of reminded me of the Bus’ fumble vs. Indy. Then when NE missed the FG, well, hell, I thought it was 2006 and had to check my calendar.

  • countertorque

If you can only have Clark or Polamalu in the game, who do you pick?

    • Rob D

Right now. Clark. Cause I know Troy is going to get hurt. Clark is probably the most underrated player on the Steelers roster. And I’ve been one of the worst at underrating him. That D just plays and looks different with Clark in there. That hit Mundy laid down was pure Ryan Clark inspired. Punish the ball carrier.

  • LoungeLegal

Well, after some time to decompress and think about the game when I’m not on the “emotional roller coaster” I ride for all 60 minutes of the game here are my thoughts:
    1. Haley Offense – still to early to tell. Early on in the game it looked like BA was still calling plays. What was that fake end-around/draw play on 3rd and 4? At least it wasn’t on our own 3. Cols714 said and I agree how he seems to be able to generate a lot of TOP for the Steelers…but how much of that is 3rd down heroics by Ben? I would have liked to see that screen work (on 3rd down I believe) to the RB (I think Redman?) where Colon was out front with one defender but pass was dropped…that could have been really good.
    2. Our RBs. Look pretty good. I am now fully on board the “don’t pay a lot for RBs” bandwagon. They may not have the big-play ability of Mendy but they are bruisers and with BB, MW, and AB we have plenty of big-play ability.
    3. Our WR corps. Is serious business.
    4. Our D. Still haven’t seen our starting D yet this season. So this just makes me wonder how much injuries will continue to haunt us.
    5. Game management. A gripe I have had for a while now is that Ben and the coaches really need to get better at clock management. Wasting TOs, odd play calls given the situations, or (last week) stupid spikes to stop the clock.

Overall this seemed like two games. The first three drives (PIT, NYJ, PIT) then the rest of the game. After the first drive our D got settled and took control (I feel that is common with LeBeau…teams often get a good first drive then he dials it in) and our offense started gaining traction. We did waste a few opportunities to really blow the lid off it earlier towards the end but they did put it away.

Hey, good game. On a personal note, this Sunday my kids (3 and 4) figured out about cheering with their Towels! Daddy is very proud.

  • Cols714

I watched the Arizona Pats game and whenever Brady felt pressured at all he was awful. Ben on the other hand gets killed every game, has to constantly step around pressure and shake tackles off and still manages to get the ball downfield.

I really think that even though Ben is always named one of the top 10 QBs, he’s still underrated. Put him behind an OL and he will still come out OK. These other guys like Brady and Brees, they get pressure and they turn to mush.

    • Rob D

Ben is absolutely amazing in that category. I’ve read about how tough Johnny U was …and I believe BB is cut from the same cloth.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

Did the Jets really complete zero passes to wide receivers in the second, third and fourth quarters?
