Week 7 Game Thread: Cincinnati Bengals

God knows what’ll happen Sunday night in Cincy but at the very least we can enjoy what the Texans did to the Ravens today.

Good Lord. JAX pounding OAK on the road, BUF was scoring at will vs TEN. We will rue the days that we lost to these two by week 16.

  • calig23

Wallace drops a pass on 3rd and 9 that would have converted, and they have to settle for 3 on the opening drive.

  • calig23

Defense off to a good start: Green-Ellis shreds them for 12 yards on the Bengals first play

  • calig23

Gah! Larry Foote can’t hold onto a tipped pass.

  • calig23

So far, it looks Green-Ellis is just going to run all over the Steelers

  • calig23

I’m amazed that Marvin Lewis had them go for it on 4th and 1 here; he seems like one of the most conservative coaches in the league sometimes.

  • calig23

    This run “D” is toast.

  • calig23

There’s the obligatory penalty on a special teams play…

  • calig23

    Drop #2 for Wallace

  • tuber

Run right at ziggy hood on every play.

  • calig23

That was a nice trick play. Too bad Batch dropped it

  • calig23

Not sure Ben should have thrown that pass. Miller was very well covered.

  • calig23

And another another ST penalty wipes out a great return by Brown

  • calig23

When was the last time the Steelers got blown out by the Bengals? 14-3 now

  • calig23

I believe that was yet another ST penalty. 3rd one of so far

  • Canadian Steeler

I’m at the point Ryan was last year – bench Wallace. Sanders and Cotchery are more than capable enough.

    • ErikH

I’m with you on that. He really thinks he’s worth big money with play like that? Glad we signed the best receiver on the team in the off season.

  • calig23

Welcome back, Lamar! Huge interception. Now go get a TD, guys!

  • calig23

Despite all the bumbling in the first half, it’s all tied up at 14,. I’ll take it.

  • Sarah

Guys WTH happened I missed the first half?? Last I saw it was 14-3 howd we manage 11 pts?? 2 pointer?

    • calig23

Woodley interception set up a TD to Heath, followed by a 2 pointer to Heath to tie the game

      • Sarah

        good lord –
Reading all your comments guys LOL!
        ALmost glad I missed it!!!!!!!
WTH is wrong with Wallace??? He catching Limas’ Disease??

  • calig23

Wonder of wonders: Nice kick return by Rainey and no flag!

  • calig23

AB is having a heck of a game.

  • calig23

    Nice 3rd down converstion Sanders.

  • calig23

    Rainey for the TD!!!!!

  • calig23

Wallace drops another, this time on 3rd down

  • calig23

    Solid pooch punt by Ben

  • calig23

Awfully conservative play-calling by the Bengals here. I know they are deep in their own territory, but down by a TD with 5+ minutes left, going run-run-pass doesn’t seem smart

  • Sarah

    What’s Wallace’s Drop v Catch Ratio tonight???

  • calig23

I think that’s a catch by Wallace, so I’m very glad Lewis is challenging.

    • calig23

      On further looks… I’m not sure it’s a catch

  • calig23

Catch is upheld, Bengals down to 1 timeout

  • calig23

And Dwyer pretty much locks this up with a 32 yard run.

  • Sarah

    J Dwyer 100 yrds?

  • Sarah

    ….and it’s over.
Let the head scratching begin over this team. In a good way.

  • calig23

They screwed around quite a bit in this game, but Ben played mostly well(the pick was a poor decision), AB played very well, and the defense- after the opening drive- put in a pretty good performance.

This was a good win, especially given that it was divisional game. The Ravens getting blasted today also helped.

    • drohan5

Agreed, except I wouldn’t say the INT was a bad decision. It was a poor throw. He threw it high, but if it’s on the money it’s a TD.

  • Canadian Steeler

Best we’ve played all year if you ask me. Both lines really improved in the second half. Keenan Lewis looks like he’s becoming a player. They looked like the Steelers in the second half, which was great to see.

  • Sarah

wow…and I see OAK and Janokowski nips JAX in OT….crazy day. Too bad the Patsies escaped…but the Ratbirds got plucked, stuffed and roasted !!

  • David

This is turning into the Tease Year. We play with potential, get high hopes, then they’re dashed the next game or so. So we play well at Cincy, we’ll probably beat the Deadskins, then play poorly at NYG.

OK, I’ll play the part of the teasee–great game by us.

  • Rob D

Great win against a not so great team whose in-game coaching may suck worse than Tomlin at his worst. I know ..a win’s a win, especially after a 2-3 start. Offensive playcalling was wonderful but they didn’t put the points up at the end of drives in the 2nd half. Fine against the Bengals with their one deep threat..not so good against teams with 3 or more weapons that we will be facing later on. Defense was much better,,the O-line was mostly great including..gasp..Willie Colon! Dwyer ran like the mini Bus..really like that kid as he plays with a purpose and has fire. A Brown earning his money,, Sanders with some timely plays. Heath displaying Pro Bowl abilities catching and blocking..Ben mostly great..It feels like this offense is close to breaking out and Haley called a great game tonight. With a few more catches, this one is not as close as it turned out.
A nice win to enjoy for us fans..we deserve it after all the angst …

  • Sarah

And….I guess we have to hand it to Ike and the Secondary?…..Great job.

  • LoungeLegal

Had to DVR the game so you all missed out on my insightful running commentary /sarcasm/. Anyway, just a couple of points to add to what has already been said:
    1. I think it is clear that unless MW really gets his act together he is not getting anywhere near Fitz money for his next contract. I don’t care how fast you are those drops where inexcusable.

    2. I like how the Haley O really maximizes TOP. I think you see the effect of that that late in the game when the running gets a bit easy as their D gets gassed. Not sure what I think about all the end-arounds…they were successful this game so I guess I can’t complain too much.

    3. The best thing about this new O scheme is that it really does a good job of keeping Ben upright…or at least compared to BAs scheme. The Bengals are one of the best sack teams in the NFL and they had what, two? Now Ben pulled some amazing moves to make a couple guys miss but still it seemed like for the most part he had good protection….or at least good considering we have three of our starting O-linemen out.

    • Rob D

MW has below average hands. I think his performance last year down the stretch and the beginning of this year gives the Steelers all the ammunition they need to bring him back for a lower salary than he apparently wants (ie) Fitzgerald, Megatron territory. I like Mike but we can’t break the bank on a guy who hasn’t yet developed into a multi-tooled player. We have way too many other needs and need the sal cap room to fix them.

Yep. that TOP is so crucial for us given the state of our D and some key parts that are aging. There’s a lot of variety …the end arounds probably don’t work with faster D’s etc…but Haley seems to know how to tailor the offense against a particular team’s strengths and weaknesses. If we ever get our O-line healthy and get the same guys on the field week after week we should be pretty darn good on that side of the ball.I’m happy that Ben doesn’t seem to be taking the big hits as often as well. He looks as agile as ever and in better shape too. Must be that home cooking. lol..

Do we want to talk ST’s coverage? Nah, me either..

      • djanyreason

I’m on a phone posting this so I can’t go get stats, but through his first three seasons Wallace posted an excellent catch rate, even before accounting for his high YPC. Before Sunday, he had a higher catch rate than AB this year.

He had a bad game, but one game out of 58 doesn’t mean he has bad hand, or is or its not worth Fitzgerald money.

        • Cols714

Yes. I agree. This phony meme has cropped up that Wallace doesn’t fight for the ball and never had good hands.

Although the way he is performing lately, maybe it isn’t such a phony idea after all.

          • Sarah

Yeah dunno about hands or fighting for the ball. He’s definitely got the yips I think right now.
But honestly about the last 4+ games last season I thought he was awful – jalf-azzed, just phoning it in. None of the energy of the other WRs. And this with the 150%-every-play Hines Ward right there.

        • Cols714

Oh yeah, and checking steelerslounge from a phone makes you the site’s #1 fan.

    • David

The Bungels had 3 sacks, but who’s counting? Ben, as you noted, was upright a lot and that is the main thing I like about Haley’s O. I also DVR’ed it and I’ll look at STs. Based on memory, our Van Dyke guy is killing us with penalties.

  • Sarah

WHen in town I Listen to the local radio broadcast and they have local guys on the sidelines…MW had an endzone drop and the sideline guy was saying the look on his face when he came back to the bench was completely stunned. COuld not believe what was happening to him.
To Haley/Ben’s credit they came right back to him first play next drive and got the bomb TD.

Only wish it would have wiped out his yips. I keep thinking LImas Sweed (must….not….do…that….)

  • Cols714

Good game by the Steelers. I was surprised they were able to run so effectively. I was also happy about the pass protection and Ben looked much sharper than he had in the previous couple of games. If he was that sharp vs Tenn. we’d be 4-2.

Mike Wallace had a bad game. But I hate all the hating done on him by fans. The guy is still a good receiver who had one of the better catch rates over the past 3 years. Give him time and he’ll turn it around. There is certainly no need to talk about how he doesn’t care or sucks or anything like that.

I was impressed by Colon for the first time all year. I was just about ready to write him off and give the other coaching staff props for not making this disastrous move to guard. However, he looked good out there yesterday. And the DBs played lights out.

I’m still worried about Harrison, he looks like he might be just about done.

    • Rob D

Harrison looks like the knee is still bothering him..they showed the angle of attack and how much steeper it was in his prime. I am not sure he ever gets back to where he was, but 75% of JH is better than anyone elses 100% on this edition of the Steelers.

Wallace is going to take a lot of heat…you want huge, cap breaking money? There is going to be a lot of heat on you when you have that kind of abysmal performance in a must win game. I agree that it goes way over the top but that’s par for the course for STeeler fans who are with the team win or tie.

Still don’t trust either of our two guards but yes..that was a very good game by Willie. Maybe they lit a fire under his considerable ass…lol

We look to have found two pretty good DB’s in Lewis and Cortez..with some hope still there that Curtis Brown will develop. That deflection by Lewis was a thing of beautifully timed athleticism and quick thinking..he got over there fast. Ike played great too..but he got some help they could afford to scheme since the Bengals have one guy you really have to worry about.

ST’s ? Can’t bring anyone down until they are at the 40 and can’t avoid getting flagged after either Brown or Rainey have dazzled with a return. WE need to get that fixed ASAP…still wondering about the firing of the ST’s coach on the eve of the season..so un-Steeler like.

  • Cols714

I’m pretty worried about facing Griffin without Polamalu. Timmons will need to be big in this one.

  • Cols714

    Podcast? Pretty please?

    Even Ted would be welcome!

  • MRav

I wish you guys weren’t so damn busy. I’ve been forced to get my Steelers digest from the amateur and self-important writing of Dave Bryan at Steelers Depot. Those articles are usually a 50/50 split of injury news and Dave blowing himself.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

Right before Halloween a year ago, I wrote a guest post about Wallace (which you can find here: http://www.steelerslounge.com/2011/10/mike-wallace-most-productive-nfl-wr/). From that point until now, he’s been dramatically less productive than he was before that point in his career. Hopefully this week or after Halloween, he’ll take off his mask and revert to the real Mike Wallace.

In that piece, the fourth point I made about his productivity since becoming a starter related to his (until that time) terrific hands: “Wallace is #2 in catches per times targeted. When you take into account
how many of his catches are bombs, Wallace simply catches a huge
percent of the balls thrown his way. He has great hands, which get
overshadowed by his otherworldly speed.” There’s more in that vein that you can click through to and read if you are interested.

  • Cols714

It really isn’t debatable. Mike Wallace has had fantastic hands up until this year. The stats bear this out. I don’t know where it began that he doesn’t fight for the ball either.

However, he better pick up his game. As dangerous as he is, I don’t like it that he’s becoming Torrey Smith like in catching the ball.

  • Cols714

Adams played well last week. I wonder now if they would consider Gilbert at LT and Adams at RT for the future. Gilbert seems to like the idea of playing LT.

    • Eric

At this point, I’d be happy if Gilbert just stopped falling on the legs of the other offensive lineman.

      • Rob D

LOL..you and me both… I love Adams at RT. Wonder if Gilbert can play guard? Errr..better not go there since I hate the Colon to guard comparisons that would crop up.

  • Cols714

Another thing is that although I miss Bruce Arians’s big play offense, I do like it that Ben has not been hit nearly as much this year. It’s nice to know that if the Steelers do make the playoffs, Ben should be much fresher than in past years.

The Haley offense does seem to be a bit more imaginative than Arians, but this might just be from watching the same offense for 5 years and now the Haley one makes everything seem new again.

  • MRave

Anybody happen to listen to Colin Cowherd’s radio show a few mornings ago? Greg Cosell said Antonio Brown was the best intermediate route runner in the league. The Steelers sure can pick em huh?
