Week 13 Game Thread: Baltimore Ravens

First, I would like to apologize to Byron for saying that Charlie should’ve been the backup all along. Batch aged in dog years since showing well early in 2010. And now the Steelers get to face the Ravens in Baltimore, where Joe Flacco has been pretty good. The upside: even if Pittsburgh loses today, they’re still in the playoff mix. It ain’t perfect, but it’s better than nothing.

Well – before we get too caught up – it is just a game.

    Very sad news -
    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000103413/article/jovan-belcher-of-kansas-city-chiefs-kills-girlfriend-self

All best wishes to friends and family and loved ones. And spare a thought for Crennel and Pioli who apparently were witness….

News alert: Curtis Brown is basically the best coverage player in the league, by far:

(It’s in the very last sentence.

  • calig23

That was great effort by Dwyer

  • Sarah

Mistake free football. Even for one drive. Nice.

  • calig23

Is chucking it long on 3rd and 3 with Batch really the best idea?

  • Sarah

Charlie goes deep on 3rd and short. Ugh.

  • Sarah

No. Maybe they confused the list of things Charlies Can Do with the list of CAN’Ts….I guess just going for surprise, but really. Slim chance of making that throw.

  • calig23

Great pass defense by Cortez Allen to break up that pass. He probably should have had a pick.

  • calig23

Two plays later, Allen gets flagged for DPI, but I didn’t see a penalty

  • calig23

Good job by the defense to hold them to 3 after that phantom DPI

  • calig23

    Clark!!!!!!!!!

  • calig23

So much for that. Now Batch tosses a pick.

    • calig23

Sorry. Not Batch; that was Antonio Brown.

  • Sarah

Are we outsmarting ourselves on O here?

  • calig23

    And that’s probably ballgame.

  • Sarah

    Awful call.

  • Sarah

Yup. Sadly I don’t think they can make up double digits.

  • Sarah

Huge swing on that holding call.

  • calig23

So is this all this game is going to be: each team throwing bombs hoping for the big play or the pass interference?

  • calig23

What the heck has happened to Wallace’s hands?

  • Sarah

I dunno. I thought the plan was to run Dwyer down their throats. Not like BAL has been great v the run.

Instead we’re getting cute with pass plays.
Now we may have to throw them.

  • calig23

Sigh. Wallace completely wide open in the endzone, and Batch airmails it into the seats. Of course, Wallace probably would have dropped it, but still…

  • Sarah

Well admittedly I’m in a crappy mood – but at this point I’d be happy to see Hoyer….

  • calig23

    Dwyer!!!!!!!!!!!! Great effort!

  • Sarah

Cripes did Charlie throw a block??

  • calig23

Sigh…. Sanders wide open for a big gain on 3rd and 11, and then he fumbles it all on his own. Ravens recover.

  • calig23

As bad as Leftwich and Batch have been these past three weeks, the Steelers probably could have won all three games if they could just stop fumbling the ball.

  • calig23

If Sanders doesn’t cough it up, it was a TD. Absolutely nobody in between him and the endzone.

  • calig23

    That’s ballgame

  • Sarah

Good Lord Manny can’t hang on AGAIN.
This is getting impossible to watch.

  • calig23

There’s the obligatory penalty on a special teams play. I’m pretty sure they’ve been flagged on a ST play at least once in every game this year.

  • calig23

    Redman!!!!!! Nice run

  • calig23

And Batch wastes a great drive by throwing a pick into the endzone, and the Steelers let Reed run it out to the 27.

  • calig23

That was a dumb pass by Batch into double coverage.

It would be nice if the defense could come up with a turnover…

  • calig23

    Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fumble, Steelers ball!!!!!!!!!

  • calig23

Harrison strips Flacco, and Hood recovers.

  • calig23

I have no idea how this will be ruled. It looked like Miller might have gotten the ball barely over before going out of bounds, but it’s awfully close. Since it was ruled a TD on the field, it’ll probably stay that way. I hope.

  • calig23

    It’s a TD!

  • Sarah

    Wow.

Well it’s a miracle they’re still in this.

    I think that’s ELEVEN turnovers the last 2 games?….

I’m finding it near impossible to watch.

  • calig23

Hey, Wallace held onto a big catch.

  • calig23

    Now Wallace is hurt.

  • calig23

Wow! Huge penalty on Baltimore for roughing the passer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/randy.steele.583 Randy Steele

If you have to pick one moment in the game that lost it for the Ravens, it was that penalty.

  • calig23

Alright guys, just don’t turn the ball over!

  • calig23

And the Steelers commit a false start… Foot shooting, commence!

  • calig23

Trusting Suisham to make a 40 yard field goal to win makes me awfully nervous…

  • calig23

Ok, 42 yard field goal attempt coming up….

  • calig23

    Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turning point of this game: Harrison forcing the fumble.

  • Sarah

    PROPS TO CHARLIE.
If that’s his Swan Song – beautifully fitting.

  • David

    Wow. Just wow. I’m speechless.

This proves that Santa Claus is real.
    My Lord…just speechless…

  • Rob D

What a game…I had tears for Charlie after I threw the towel in on him mid week..Guy may have gotten old, but he’s got NFL guts.

    This could change everything.

  • Sarah

I got the sniffles too watching Charlie in that big group hug at the end. Good on him.

  • Sarah

DId Tomlin and Harbough snipe at each other in the handshake???

  • http://www.facebook.com/randy.steele.583 Randy Steele

Gee… isn’t it great how everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was totally and completely wrong.

    • Rob D

I can’t believe they won after BAtch threw the INT to Reed. Incredible they were able to hold it together and come back and take the win. Things is looking up!
Errrrr..except the early report is that Ike has a serious fibula injury..of course we can’t go through a game without losing a key piece…freaking year is going to kill me.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

After the game two weeks ago, I wrote, “So I guess we learned that at this point Leftwich + cracked ribs – the Ravens D = Flacco + healthy – the Steelers D.” This week it was Batch – Vaseline on Manny’s and Mike’s hands – the Ravens D = Flacco – the Steelers D. This time we won.

Sadly, if one of our FGs two weeks ago had been a TD, we’d be in first place right now. Looking at the schedule, in the final four weeks, we may be favored each week and the Ravens might be underdogs in each. But picking up 3 games will be tough (and making up only 2 games looks like it won’t be enough with our conference record tiebreaker). Oh, well, time to replicate the year Bettis steamrolled Urlacher…

  • MRav

    My take:

    Look a James Harrison sighting!

Wow Charlie made a lot of people look stupid. Oh, and nice freaking block Chuck.

How good has Shwee-Sam been this year?

    Emmanuel…(disapproving head nod)
