Steelers-Redskins Chattin’ Thread

No word yet on Le’Veon Bell, but if he doesn’t play, fine. As Big Ben said last week, when it comes to injuries, he’s less concerned with the players behind him, than the five right in front of him.

Fair point.

As for what I’ll be watching during Monday’s preseason game: Continued conistency from the offensive line (this has been copied and pasted from every post I’ve ever written, dating back to HSS’ beginnings back in 2004), Markus Wheaton (and the other young wideouts), the tight end(s?), Jarvis Jones and all the other young linebackers, and on the back end, Shamarknado and Robert Golden.

Basically: Everything.

Feel free to add your thoughts and concerns below.

I’m looking for a solid running game. One of the signs of Denver’s mastery of the zone blocking scheme was that for so long they could put whoever in the backfield and they would be a thousand yard rusher. We should be able to do some damage on the ground with our backs. If we can’t then we may have trouble this year on the offensive side of the ball.

On a related note, Dulac is reporting that Le’Veon is expected to play tonight.

  • Randy Steele

Doesn’t take a genius to realize pass protection is going to be a big problem this year.

  • Cols714

Firing Bruce Arians was a huge mistake. This team was at its best when it was running and throwing deep. The Todd Haley short pass offense sucks.

  • http://www.steelerslounge.com/ ryan

Didn’t think it was possible, but this outfit looks worse this week than they did last week. Can’t wait for the last two weeks of preseason!

    • Terribletoweler

This has to be rock bottom, right?

  • Gretz

This offensive line might be a problem. What are Max Starks and Willie Colon up to?

  • Cols714

Moral of the story? Don’t get rid of a successful OC.

  • http://www.steelerslounge.com/ ryan

More good news: Landy Jones didn’t blow up the running play on his first series. Baby steps.

  • Randy Steele

Whoduthunkit? Nice long throw by Jones to Wheaton. Almost effortless.

  • Rob D

Bell with mid foot sprain according to EB. MRI tomorrow..crap. I hate the preseason because of injuries but I think I’m going to hate this offense more in reg. season..Haley? This is the best you can do with the first team? Where’s the progress?

    • Randy Steele

Mid-foot sprain is often a euphemism for a Lisfranc injury, which could be catastrophic for Bell. It ended Willie Reid’s (remember him?) career.

      • Randy Steele

One last thought about this puke-fest and then I will forever erase this game from my mind: If Le’Veon Bell had performed as well as Jonathan Dwyer did last night, we would all have been swooning madly over Bell today.

        • Rob D

Agreed, except for the fumble, he had a very nice night. He is, in all probability, our starter.
Eddie B just tweeted that Bell’s injury is not as serious as Spaeth’s (does that mean it’s NOT the dreaded Lis Franc?) but could still keep him out “for a while”. I’m thinking he’s not going to be much of a factor this year if true since he’ll miss a lot of reps in practice now..etc..with our stellar (ahem) O-line. Two more meaningless games to pile up even MORE injuries before the season even starts! The NFL is FANtastic!!

  • Cols714

Normally I’m optimistic about the Steelers because they’ve done nothing but win since 1992 or so.

However, this preseason has been awful. The same problems that we had last year are present again. The offense is terrible. The OL is bad. The RBs get injured or suck.

With the Bengals and Ravens in the same division, I’m worried that we might be in for another year like last year.

I know, I know it’s only the preseason and the Steelers usually find a way to win. I’m just not feeling good about this season.

    Hopefully I’m wrong.

Also and too, firing Bruce Arians was a huge mistake.

    • countertorque

I thought Dwyer looked pretty good. I’m willing to wait 2 more weeks before I start panicing about the o-line.

  • Cols714

Have I mentioned that we could use Bruce Arians back?

    • countertorque

      We’re ignoring you :)

  • Cols714

We had a good offense that won us one Super Bowl and got us a Mendenhall fumble or a Big Ben overthrow from winning another. We had wins, we had numbers, we had it all.
No dinking and dunking, big plays, using our unique QB in the proper way, chewing up the play clock so the defense was always well rested.

    What happened?

    • Eric

      The quarterback kept getting hurt.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

TS Eliot once wrote: “This is the way the world ends: not with a bang but with a whimper.” If Guy Whimper plays much this season, Ben may be quoting this, the Wasteland and other Eliot apocalyptic writings.

    • http://www.steelerslounge.com/ ryan

I can not overstate how bad Guy Whimper is.

      • Rob D

I know I am just a lowly NFL fan but I believe this guy is someone’s cousin who has the goods on every GM in the league. “I’m playing. Or if not, I bring out the footage of the secret ceremony where all you guys, (shall we say “interact”) with goats in a pagan ritual heretofore unknown to the public”
It’s the only reasonable explanation for his abiility to put on a uniform and actually play in this league.

  • Cols714

I also feel that Pouncey is overrated. It worries me that his contract is going to be too high for what he is which is a bit better than average, but no All-Pro.

Hey, we’re gonna fire up the SL Podcast Thursday AM so if there’s anything you want us to cover — other than Cols’ concerns below — leave them here.

    • Rob D

Cool! Some things that crossed my mind this week: Is Haley going to get fired during the season?

Should everyone on the D side of the ball, including coaches, get a raise? Look at the depth and quality play we are getting from just about everyone along the D-line and ILB’er. Look at Sharmako Thomas and Mike Golden. Look at JJ..my eyes popped out of my head watching that guy. He’s huge. He’s incredibly quick. He’s a playmaker. He’s also young but man..you can see the future there. Woodley looked pretty good in the game as well. WE are loaded on D. Why we can’t seem to put together an O is exasperating. Patience is wearing thin. Could be some ugly scenes at Heinz if they can’t score points and have to win games by a FG a lot..

How’d you like to be Big Ben right now? You’re in the 2nd year of a total revamp of the teams O and it looks like you are going to get killed every other down. You are in your prime. You look over at the San FRan’s and SEattles and Washington’s of the world and realize that could be you scoring actual points. Maybe you think you could do better somewhere else..But you know what? He’s not that way. He’s a Steeler for life. Right? RIGHT?? I’m beginning to wonder.

      • Cols714

Ben’s not going anywhere. We just need an offense more tailored to his strengths. Except that the OC who knew how to use him is now a head coach somewhere.

    • Randy Steele

A guesstimate of which players are on the bubble might be fun. (On the other hand, after Monday night’s game, wouldn’t most of them be?)

    • EasyLikeSundayMorning

Who will be fired first, Bicknell Jr or Danny Smith? If the over-under was 7.5 and the question was, “How many OL on the current roster will be on the final 53,” would you take the over (and who would they be)? Is there a 7th OL you’d rather have now compared to Starks, Legursky or Essex? Would you rather have Max Starks or Ziggy Hood on the roster today? Will Markus Wheaton and Justin Brown contribute more or less in their first 3 seasons vs. AB and Manny? Is Brian Arnfelt really Chris Hoke in disguise? Why do you have a French song as the intro to a podcast about the Steelers?

    • GlennWa

Does Landry Jones safely make this team?
(Full disclosure: I’m something of a Landry Jones fan, and I think he has future potential. While he did some good things in the Redskins game, I saw the same couple dumb throws into blanket coverage that everyone else did. Definitely a problem he had at Oklahoma.)

  • Cols714

FWIW, Barnwell is pretty high on the Steelers this year. I was too, until the last preseason game. Which is a dumb way to evaluate things.

So…I’m back on the Steelers playoff bandwagon.

    • GlennWa

Cols, wish I could join you on that last part, but I just can’t. Pertaining to Barnwell specifically, while I respect his work let’s just say that I have a very healthy skepticism around football sabermetrics in general. Just too many variables with way too much variance.

I’m going to take the exact same stance as I did last preseason: until I see any reason to believe otherwise (in either direction), I’m pegging the Steelers as an NFL-average team. In other words, an 8-8 season (which eventually came to fruition last season). Boring, but a realistic expectation that doesn’t set me up for disappointment while I enjoy watching my team play.

  • Cols714

Sounds like Bell has Lisfranc injury. I feel really bad for him. To work this hard and get drafted and have your career pretty much ended before it begins really sucks.

    • GlennWa

Assuming a career-ending injury may be excessive, as the latest report is that Bell will be out six weeks. However, for such an injury to a RB, I’m already translating the six-week estimate to a prognosis of “will be useless for this season”, even if available.
