Week 11 Game Thread: Lions vs. Steelers

The Steelers are going to need LeBeau to do this to Megatron a few times Sunday.

In related news, Ian Rapoport, the same guy who reported last Sunday AND Thursday that  Ben would ask for a trade in the offseason even though Ben, his agent and Art Rooney II promptly denied it, reported Friday that his sources have now told him that the Steelers won’t trade the QB.

Seriously, you can’t make this up.

Meanwhile, everyone else’s sources — Ben, his agent and Rooney — told us all as much seven days ago.

Well, I know one thing’s for sure today: a Pick 6 by Mathis.

  • calig23

    1. This punter is absolutely useless.
    2. The play-calling on that final series was a trainwreck.
    3. Guy Whimper sucks.

  • calig23

That’s Ike’s 2nd dropped interception of the day.

  • David

Well, we get the ball after half.

But total team sucking in the 2nd Q. No D, Ike can’t tackle or catch, Heath can’t catch…

  • calig23

This team is so bad in the redzone. Despite that, I absolutely would have gone for it there. You know what’s going to happen now: The Lions are going to go right down the field and get a TD, and the Steelers’ brief flirtation with a win will be over. They won’t come back from a multiscore deficit.

    • David

Yep, 3 redzone trips, 3 FGs. Two were on Ben, one on Heath.

  • David

THAT was weird. And a questionable call by Schwartz.

  • David

That fake FG is coming back to haunt the Lions.

  • ThereIsNoSpoon

Too bad Cincy won. But hey, I’ll take it!

    • David

But the Raisins lost. We’re tied! Woo hoo!

      • ThereIsNoSpoon

        Amen brotha!

  • David

Weird game. Kind of like LeBeau told his D to LET Megatron catch 200 yds worth of passes to lull them into a false sense of security.

  • Randy Steele

I was trapped in Connecticut today, so I couldn’t see the Steelers’ and Lions’ game. Maybe just as well; my heart probably would have exploded.
Of minor note, while watching the Bills manhandle the Jets, I saw Frank “the Tank” Summers rumble two yard to score a touchdown for Buffalo. I didn’t know he was still in the league.

  • Randy Steele

Quick poll: After watching some of the Raiders’ game today I began to wonder whom would you rather have as the Steelers’ back-up quarterback–undrafted Matt McGloin? Or Tom Jones… I mean Tom Landry… I mean Landry Jones?

(Too bad the Steelers couldn’t manage to get a scout to watch a Penn State game last year.)

    • ThereIsNoSpoon

McGloin in a heartbeat. As a Penn Stater, I had a unique view on his development. He really was not good until Bill O’Brien got ahold of him for McGloin’s senior season. The results were incredible. He is a very hard worker and dedicated to his craft. We’ll see what happens now that defenses have tape on him but for one game, he was, from what I saw (and that wasn’t much, as OAK/HOU seemingly went to commercials the same time Steelers/Lions) playing well. I could easily see him morphing into (at the very least) an excellent NFL backup.

I really enjoyed this game, except for that atrocious 2nd quarter. I am old enough to remember when Heath Miller could catch the ball. I mean..wow..that guy used to have money hands..no longer true I’m afraid. He’s hanging out with Ike too much? lol..If STafford had been more accurate early, I think they win this one. He missed two separate sure thing TD”s and I was glad all over about it. I loved Billick mocking Silver and Rapoport (although he didn’t name them) by saying the whole “Ben wants to be traded” thing was one source (Rapoport) talking to another (Silver). There’s no real evidence for this and I am sure they hear a ton of rumours during the course of the year, but this whole thing was just ridiculous. People WANT stuff like that to be true and are easily led..I’ve gone off the deep end a few times during this trying year, but I haven’t gone down the trade and fire everybody route some STeeler fans have..it’s embarrassing..

I liked Wheaton when he came in today..you can see he’s got the stuff. Wish we had the 3rd rounder for Sanders but at the same time I was absolutely thrilled we didn’t lose him AND Wallace in the same offseason. Some of the same old problems in the red zone today but we held off that Dline pretty well and gave BEn a chance to make plays (if you watched the KC/Denver tilt tonight, you saw pass protection Ben has NEVER had during his career in Pittsburgh..the one throw down the sidelines to Thomas they featured showed that Peyton could have done a series of arabesques after the throw and still not have had a hand placed on him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmRrfm1ihGg

I’m sure we missed Woodley, Foster and Keisel but it wasn’t blatantly obvious to me. Heyward just looks better the more he plays. Overall, I was happy with the game /gameplan…except for having Ike single covering that Megatron thing..lol..noone can handle that guy alone..except Mel Blount before the rule changes..he’d have him crying by halftime, trust me.

Onwards and upwards..tied with Balt !

  • Randy Steele

Not sure if you caught this breaking news item, but the Art Rooney announced today that the team has played so well wearing its throwback uniforms, that the Steelers will use a newly modified version of the uniform (seen below) for the remainder of this season and beyond.

    • Eric

I’m pretty sure the NFL has a strict visor policy…

    • Rob D

I LOL’ed.as they say on the info super highway..

In the NFC, in addition to the division leaders, there are 6 teams with at least 5 wins vying for the wild card slots. Fortunately for us, in the AFC there are 3. The two we are realistically chasing for the 6th seed are two 5-5 teams: the Jets, who we’ve already beaten, and the Dolphins, who we play on December 8 at Heinz.

Of the other 4-6 teams in the AFC, we lost to Oakland and Tennessee (who both now have hurt QBs), we’ve beaten Baltimore, we play Cleveland twice and the last team is the Chargers (who lose all current tiebreakers with and an 0-2 division and 2-5 conference record).

There are also lots of games between the teams fighting for the 6th seed. So we’re close to controlling our destiny. Gotta keep winning to make that happen.

If the Bengals had lost to the Browns, or even if they’d won but looked bad, the division would have been more in play. However, if the Bengals lose either at San Diego or at home against the Colts, and we win our next three (at CLE, at BAL on Thanksgiving, at Heinz vs. the Dolphins), our Sunday night game in Cincy on December 15 will be for the division lead.

    • Cols714

I just don’t see it happening. We will lose at least one of the at Cleveland or Baltimore games.

Which usually would be fine, those are tough divisional games. But losing those 3 inexcusable games to the Titans, Raiders, and Vikings means we have no margin for error. So…screwed.

      • David

Agreed. We won, but we’re still not a very good team.
Hope I’m wrong, but we’ll continue to lose games we should win. Just 8-8 would be an accomplishment this year.

  • Cols714

This team is looking better but losing those 3 games to the Titans, Vikings, and Raiders are going to cost the team the playoffs.

In good news, it turns out that given playing time, Worilds and Heyward are actually pretty good.

I more good news, the right side of the line looks pretty good and getting Pouncey back should help even more. Draft a LT next year and I think we are done on the OL for a while.

In bad news, Vince Williams is still awful and so awful that we now have Troy as an ILB.

    • Terribletoweler

Where have you gone, Sean Spence? Get well for next season.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

I just watched that LeBeau video which is now one of my all-time favorites. He changed Haywood Jeffries name to Haywood Jablome!

    • http://www.steelerslounge.com/ ryan

I stumbled across that video trying to find moving images of LeBeau playing with the Lions. For some reason that popped up and I am eternally grateful. The man a was 52 at the time!

      • Cols714

        That was awesome! Thanks!

  • David

Wow, I love seeing the Patsies lose, but man did they get jobbed on that last call.

And surprise, surprise: Peter King also says they did, but the penalty on the hit to Brees was correct and had nothing to do with a Manning/Brady/Brees rule. How many times has Ben been hit high, low, and in the facemask in the pocket?

    • Cols714

Yep, that last call was terrible. But I’m glad, screw the Patriots. Ben never gets the calls on late hits. Never. Remember when he was hit in the face and broke his nose vs the Ravens? No call. Last night someone touched, barely, Tom Brady and they got roughing the passer call to keep a drive alive.

      • Randy Steele

Yeah, it was a terrible call, but guess what? Being the total homer that I am, I could care less. The Pats always always always get the calls. For once, they didn’t, and it cost them a game.

So how do you like them apples, New England?

    • ThereIsNoSpoon

I have definitely seen plays with less-catchable balls be flagged as PI, but also think about this: Brady underthrew that pass, by quite a bit. If he puts more air under it, no way the officials pick up the flag. Also: if that game is in New England, no way they pick up the flag either.

  • David

Looking back at the fake FG, Schwartz was right on one account: they saw what they wanted. We had 7 players lined up on the right, only 4 on the left, 2 big gaping holes.

But still, he should’ve taken the points. Glad he didn’t.

  • Cols714

Well, this is the week we find out if we need to care the rest of the way. I’m betting we lose one of these games and it’s all over. But we’ll see.

    • Randy Steele

It doesn’t cost anything to be optimistic, Cols.

    • ThereIsNoSpoon

According to DVOA, Cleveland’s D is slightly better than Oakland’s; a little better against the pass, slightly worse against the run. It will all come down to turnovers. May Haden suddenly develop ‘The Hands of Ike.’

  • Cols714

This Cleveland game is going to be a real test for Haley.
