Week 14 Game Thread: Dolphins vs. Steelers

Yes, there’s still a chance at the postseason.

(FYI: We’ve been working through some issues with the site that hosts SL, so things have been a little wonky the last week or so. We’re hoping to iron all that out in the next few days. Feel free to blame Mike Tomlin since he’s responsible for everything else that has happened since Thanksgiving.)

Well, so much for us not losing a draft pick…

It’s pretty obvious now that the NFL thinks Coach T did that on purpose.

  • David

Anyhow, for the game today, can Miami play in the cold?
    And can we protect Ben?

  • calig23

They got off to a good start this in this game, but at some point it turned, and now they look like crap. I think it was the long run by Tannehill that shifted things.

  • calig23

    Troy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • calig23

That makes up for the easy one he dropped earlier in the game.

  • calig23

Can somebody explain to me how the Steelers can get hammered by the Patriots, then manhandle the Browns a few weeks later, and now the Browns are winning 12-0 in New England? Oh yeah, and the Jets, who the Steelers throttled, are leading Oakland by 10. The same Raiders who the Steelers lost to.

    This team is so frustrating.

    • Cols714

That’s the nature of the NFL. Crazy things happen every week.

  • calig23

This defense sucks. Poor coverage, poor tackling, little pressure. They’re just going to give the lead right back.

  • calig23

    That’s a TD.

  • calig23

Now take control of this game, guys!

  • calig23

Not a good time for the dropsies…

  • calig23

This team just can’t get out of its own way sometimes.

  • calig23

Ravens have taken the lead late against the Vikings.

  • calig23

    This defense is terrible.

  • calig23

    Nothing but chokers.

  • calig23

Of course they start with a penalty on the kickoff.

  • Sarah

    Sadly, they are .
On the plus side, maybe they caved so quickly Ben has time…..

  • calig23

Now they burn a timeout? Seriously? With 2 timeouts and the 2 minute warning, they could have punted, but that’s not a good option now.

The odds of our making the playoffs flipped from about 70-80% to 1-1.5% when Brown’s last-second miracle TD wasn’t a TD. But our odds are now roughly 50x better than C3PO’s calculation for successfully navigating an asteroid field, so there is that.

There is another reason to play to win, though: if we end up in a three-way tie at 8-8 with the Dolphins and Ravens, we’d eliminate the Ravens and then the Dolphins would make it over us. Being able to play spoiler to the Ravens is reason enough to root for us to win until the Dolphins win 2 more games.

    • David

Agreed, I think we can pretty much nix the playoff talk and talk spoiler role and draft.

      RE: draft
I like the CBS mock that has us drafting OT Lewan from Michigan.
SI has us drafting DT Nix from Notre Dame in R1.
      We still need ILB, CB
I hope we do not draft a tall WR in R1

      • Cols714

Seeing the improvement in the LT position has made me rethink the draft. I’m down with a NT in the 1st round.

        • David

How did Adams grade out yesterday?

          • Canadian Steeler

PFF had him as our best offensive player, but Steelers Depot said he was given alot of help. Any chance he could be flipped back to the right side? I don’t think Gilbert has been all that impressive and Beachum (when healthy) has done nothing to deserve the bench. Adams did well run blocking on the right side at the beginning of last season IIRC.

Count me in for drafting either a NT or LT in R1. I’d like a player who can consistently have splash plays/TDs, although Brown has definitely improved in that regard this year.

        • Randy Steele

I’m shocked to admit that perhaps the worst decision the Steelers’ front office made last off-season was to cut Casey Hampton.

          • Eric

I don’t think it was a mistake to cut Hampton, he was declining fast. The mistake was not having someone who could replace him.

          • Rob D

I also think Casey was done, but that’s hardly a professional opinion..lol…I had huge doubts aabout McClendon’s ability to plug the gaps and that has borne out..we were gashed up the middle a lot especially early in the year. Why they didn’t plug Fangupo, a guy whose position IS NT in and try STeve at Hood’s spot with Heyward starting as well is a mystery. There seems to be a reluctuance to try new guys on the Steelers. If McC was even competent at stopping the run, I would not be complaining. He’s probably a very good DE trying to play NT..If most observers can see that, why can’t the Steelers? It’s like they are stubborn to the point of madness sometimes..this guy IS GOING TO WORK ! Why? Because we say so and its the next man up. Well the next man up sometimes sucks…lol

          • Randy Steele

I generally agree, Eric. Casey was in serious decline. He had very little push left, but he was still plugging his gaps pretty well, better than McClendon is doing. (Although in McClendon’s defense, perhaps he’s been instructed to try to penetrate more.) One more year of Hampton at NT might not have been a completely stupid idea.

That said, the real loss, which to me was also a big surprise, was Larry Foote. Who ‘da thunk that?! Obviously, there was no Plan B after Foote went done. Being forced to play Troy Polamalu as a linebacker is the epitome of desperate, although as someone wrote, he moves much better going forward than backward these days.

Oh, well. These are the kinds of problems that 5-8 teams have.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

One thing that annoys me is when writers write things that are not true. For example, several writers (including from the PPG) have said the only way for the Steelers to make the playoffs is to win 3 and have the Dolphins lose 3. While the scenarios are unlikely, there are some in which the Dolphins win 1 or we lose 1 and we still get in at 8-8 or 7-9. The reason is that if the Jets are tied with the Dolphins, they eliminate the Dolphins within their division. We’d hold the tiebreakers against the Ravens and then we’d eliminate the Jets head to head.
