Week 16 Game Thread: Steelers vs. Packers

The Steelers are still in, even if just barely.

So there’s that.

In related news, does anybody think LaMarr Woodley shouldn’t be cut in the offseason, even if that means waiting till June 1 for salary-cap reasons?

I was overjoyed when we signed Woodley to that huge contract..thought he was a dominant fixture type..hoo boy…awful contract now. If Worilds signs with them, Woodley is toast. Otherwise I believe they bring LaMarr back for one more year since they aren’t exactly stacked at LBer (as in, proven NFL level talent) I’d cut him anyway..but I don’t believe the FO lose 2 LBers like that

So on the 3rd and 2 I was thinking “they will pitch back or hand off deep, suchbthatvthe ballcarrier has to go 5-8 yards to gain the LOS….,”

    And….stuffed.

  • calig23

This team is so bad at tackling.

  • calig23

There was some dubious play-calling in that two minute offense, and they left a timeout in their pocket for no particular reason.

  • calig23

The defense finally makes a play, getting a sack on 3rd down, but fouls by both teams negates the play. Naturally, they then let Lacy rumble for an easy conversion.

  • calig23

That;s a such a joke penalty. I think the Dolphins got screwed on something similar against the Patriots earlier in the year.

  • Sarah

    Did we not have posession?

    • calig23

Apparently picking up the ball doesn’t count as possession.

  • calig23

Good job by the offense to go right back down the field and retake the lead.

  • calig23

That seems about right: Coverage team gives up a 40+ yard return.

  • calig23

    Cortez Allen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • calig23

Sigh…. That’s not the way to put this game way, Ben.

  • calig23

There was a time when a 10-point lead was an automatic win for the Steelers. That time is long past. A dumb interception by Ben and a 3-and out turns 31-21 into 31-31.

  • calig23

That seems about right. Whatever happened to the squib kicks they used to do?

  • calig23

I’m not on the fire Mike Tomlin bandwagon, but if they lose this game it’s on him for not having the Steelers run the clock down and kicking a field goal.

    • Sarah

Coach Clock Mgmt. what an idiot.

      • Rob D

Agreed..not on that bandwagon either, but man o man..that is just basic stuff there. You knew GB was going to let them score to preserve time etc. Then they kick it to the goalline (of course) and they guy nearly runs it back. The got lucky..but they deserved a little luck after the screwing over on the non PI call on Brown on 3rd down (HUGE momentum shift after that) as well as the refs not knowing the rules on possession after a blocked figgie..Entertaining game..I guess Mikey is not going to have a losing season after all. But we are dropping out of prime position in the draft. The cost of mediocrity! Huzzah!! (and no, I am not advocating they lose for a better pick..I picked them to win this game in my pool..so nyahhhh)

    • David

Firing him crossed my mind when we didn’t take two knees.

And have you ever seen a call go against the team that blocks the FG, where they don’t get the ball? Gees my knees Christmas.

      We won, though.

  • Canadian Steeler

That was one of the most enjoyable regular season wins that I can remember. Something about overcoming terrible reffing that makes it that much better.

Can’t believe we’re still in it. Jets beating Dolphins is the tough/big one I think.

I agree that Tomlin made a mistake at the end of the game, but not by not taking the knee. There had already been a kick blocked inside the 5 this game. Take the guaranteed points if they’re there. Could see waiting til third down to try to do that, but still try and score the touchdown at some point. Where he made the mistake was not doing a squib kick there. Hyde had killed us all day. But I can’t fault him too much, as it looked like he was the one who called the hard count on that 4th down to get the encroachment.

  • Rob D

Sarah..what is your current goals against average? Hee hee…just a little joke, hope you are well and still playing hockey!

    • Sarah

      In a 3 week holiday break, so….0.00 !

      • Rob D

        ;)

  • ThereIsNoSpoon

Missed the first quarter of the game…what happened to Jarvis Jones? I saw Sylvester playing a ton in the second half. Looked like he was lined up as LOLB.

    • David

Out due to illness, so says the injury report.

      • Rob D

You’d never know anything listening to Harlan and Wilcotts..The D team of NFL announcers. Why I learned via the wisdom of Solomon that we were VERY hard to run on this year! Another pearl from the man…lol

        • ThereIsNoSpoon

You don’t say! I guess if Wilcotts says it, it must be true. And I hope Jones doesn’t have the stomach bug which is currently running rampant through my household. Not to gross anyone out, but puke + legos = building blocks of the biggest mess in history.

          • Rob D

LOL..anyone with kids has seen such horrors..

          • David

Say…, my kids just went through the same thing. Either our kids know each other from school/daycare or there is a rampant stomach virus in our region of the U.S.

BTW, it was reported as the flu for Jones. Sucks.

  • Randy Steele

I’m not on the dump-Tomlin bandwagon either or anything like that, but after that game, he has a helluva lot of explaining to do, even though the Steelers managed to win. Some truly block-headed decisions.

  • EasyLikeSundayMorning

Wow, a lot of negativity from you guys towards Tomlin after a gutsy win. We’ve shown great resiliency this year in terms of the season (7-4 after 0-4) and also in fighting back in pretty much every game even when down by 2-3 scores. Yes, I’m aware that we’ve had to be down for this to happen. But people in practically want to put up a statue to Coughlin, but the Steelers have been dramatically better than the Giants this year, with far fewer turd sandwiches. And we’re a disciplined team with the fifth fewest penalties and very few “lack of discipline” penalties, despite prominent roles from a number of rookies on D and roughly 7 quadrillion OL combos. Calling that fake with a Australian punter who hadn’t thrown a single pass in 10 seasons showed stones. All of those things go in the Tomlin plus column.

And if the biggest complaints are end of half clock management and ST, McCarthy was worse on both.

    • Randy Steele

      Easy,
I agreed with most of what you have noted, but Tomlin’s repeated failings with clock management, while not the worst liability an NFL head coach may have, are dumbfounding, and could have easily cost the Steelers this game.

But, hey, we have an exciting win to celebrate, so what the heck? A couple days from now nobody will much care.

    • David

Well, I was screaming at the TV today for us to take two knees, but Dulac wrote that we would have kicked the FG with 0:08 left, and with that return, they could have kicked immediately to tie the game. Maybe.

But I still think we should have milked the clock.

And Easy, you are spot on: as bad as Coach T was, McCarthy had 48 seconds at our 5 to score. They ran, then on the play of the false start they would’ve run again with 20 sec. After the 10 sec run-off, they didn’t snap the ball until 3 sec left. Terrible for them, great for us.

    • David

And since you brought up McBriar, funny thing this QB rating:

      Flynn = 69.6
      Ben = 83.5
      McBriar = 118.8
